TELECONOMY GROUP CHAIRMAN APPOINTED CHAIR OF WEST
CUMBRIA AND FURNESS REGENERATION BOARD
Lancaster - 19th July 2002
Michael Hulme, founder and chairman of Teleconomy
Group Plc has been appointed chairman of the West
Cumbria and Furness Regeneration Board. At a dual
launch in Barrow and Workington today, business
leaders and politicians heard details of the progress
in setting up the New Visions Urban Regeneration
Company. Details will also be announced of the
first projects that have been recommended for
funding by the company's Shadow Board.
The launch is built around the theme of Coastal
Renaissance, aimed at supporting projects to attract
tourists to the area and build on local maritime
heritage. Tourism is a growth cluster in this
area and further development will help the diversification
of the local economy, improve the perception of
the area and exploit the coastal heritage and
environment
County Councillor Rex Toft Leader of Cumbria County
Council who will make the funding announcement
said: "Everyone is excited by the establishment
of an Urban Regeneration Company and the crucial
role it will have in the regeneration of Furness
and West Cumbria. I firmly believe that the theme
of coastal renaissance can capture the imagination
of both the public and investors".
Brian Gray, Chairman of the Northwest Development
Agency commented: "Continued commitment to
physical regeneration is needed to ensure the
Northwest achieves urban renaissance and it is
for this reason why the NWDA is delighted to support
"New Visions", which aims to secure
investment and build on environmental assets for
the benefit of Furness and West Cumbria."
